For over two decades, Halo fans have assumed the mantle of Xbox’s iconic and faceless hero The Master Chief. But as the face of heroism changed, Chief still embodied an outdated view of what heroes look like. Namely, tough white guys. For the launch of Halo Infinite, Xbox gave The Master Chief new meaning by challenging one of their most closely guarded secrets and revealed for the first time ever that the face behind The Master Chief’s visor is all of us.

Fans scanned their faces in a custom mobile site experience and put themselves behind Chief’s visor in a fully cinematic, custom version of Halo’s official launch commercial.

Fans created over 300,000 versions of our launch commercial and shared their heroism across social networks. Fans gave Chief some faces that were brand new and some were surprisingly familiar (hey there, president Obama), evolving The Master Chief into a mirror for what heroism looks like today.
